Forget what I ever said about never having a wash out day. I thought Panama was going to go under the ocean yesterday with the rain. And it was all day. But it never did get above 80, so that was good. Once again, Wayne had to go downtown, so I was on my own getting to class. At least when you are sloshing through the rain in beach flip flops (you certainly couldn’t wear anything else since there were more puddles than dry sidewalk), it is a warm rain. Luckily there was a cab driver that spotted me after about a five minute walk and took me to class. Actually, it was fun! Granted, had I had to walk much further I doubt that I would make that statement.
Wayne, on the other hand, once again went downtown to wait in multiple lines to get more signatures for his cedula (the national identity card). He met up with the lawyer’s assistance, who spoke absolutely no English (nor apparently did anyone else in the government office). Wayne was escorted to see several different officials for their signatures. Discussions were all in Spanish and he heard “SeƱor” several times, so he knew they were talking about him. Finally, Wayne’s Panamanian birth certificate appeared and then his picture was taken for the ID card. He thinks he has everything done after three days of line standing and more signatures than one can count, but he needs to return to pick up his cedula in two weeks. NOW, the process has to begin for me to get my visa to stay, which is a much more involved process. We have heard that they make you go through many hoops to “really” make sure you are married and I am not “just” trying to get a visa by tagging along with my husband. Apparently one of those “hoops” is a possible home visit to make sure we are married.
