Thursday July 1, 2010

Never will I complain about cable / internet service in America again! June 18th was the promised date we were to get our internet service. Today is the 1st of July and still no internet service. They don’t even say “tomorrow”, they say “today” and still don’t come. Same for cable.
Still taking cold showers, although “cold” isn’t really cold down here. Advantage is that the mirror does not steam up. Found out yesterday the reason we have no hot water is that someone stole the gas container and connections that were meant for our apartment. Typical problem in the area. Not much crime, but theft is an issue (crimes of opportunity). The tank wasn’t fenced in or chained. Ahhhh, this IS Panama. Still, it is interesting.
Went to the local shopping mall last night to get our cell phones that we can use locally. We had to stand in line to get someone to help us get the phone, then stand in line at the cashier to pay for the phone, THEN stand in yet another line to pick up our order, THEN stand in yet another line to have a salesman check the packages to make sure everything worked. Also, it is very difficult, if not impossible to return a product here. Just doesn’t happen. We made an evening out of just getting a couple of 15 dollars phones. But we did eat dinner at the food court at the mall. We were pretty happy we manage to get most of our order accomplished with our very very limited Spanish. They only had to retrieve the only English speaking employee one time to come and translate. The clerk was trying to asked us if we wanted “onions”. She was saying it in English and we thought she was saying a “Spanish” word and were totally confused. We are pretty helpless when it comes to the language. Hopefully that changes soon.
People couldn’t be more friendly. We have yet to pass anyone on our walks we take that doesn’t say “Buenos dias”. We respond with the same phrase. They say something else and we are LOST. But everyone smiles.

Gone full circle with living conditions. We are back to the same type of living that we had just getting out of college and living in apartments. Funny how we left that huge house and are in this small apartment (2 bedrooms - 1 bath) and it is ok. Don’t miss a thing “yet”!!! I am quite certain that day will come. The landscape is beautiful. We drive along side the Panama Canal when leaving our neighborhood. We just can’t wait to go exploring some more during the day time, but right now we sit and wait for the internet and cable people to come. Wayne takes me to the church during the day so I can log on, but someone has to be here “just in case”. With our rental car, I am not set up to drive yet, but soon I am going to have to take the chance and try to manage the crazy driving situation in this country. People are so laid back, yet when they get behind a wheel, their aggressiveness seems to appear and everyone drives like maniacs.
